I am a Christian, but I believe that the attacks on Christianity and everything Christian is actually a good thing. Find out why.

Of course, in one sense, it is very difficult to hear something you love attacked, ridiculed, and abused. Ideally, as far as I am concerned, there would be total acceptance of what I believe and who I am, that my desire to display publicly symbols of my faith, to be able to carry and read my Bible without condemnation, to be able to pray at public events would be not only accepted but encouraged by everyone around—regardless of their particular beliefs.

When people sue the government to have any symbol relating to Christianity removed and not even our elected officials are allowed to honor the faith of our nation—even a past faith primarily responsible for the freedoms of this great nation—by displaying anything related to Christianity in any government or public facility we get a sense that there is more hatred driving these lawsuits than a fear our government will actually force everyone to become a Christian. It is absurd. But there it is.

But on another level, the attacks—and that is what they are—is a very good thing. History and even current events have proven that a persecuted people are a stronger people. Here in America, Christianity has grown soft due to the lack of persecution. Christians tip their hats to God in acknowledgement but lack the passion and drive to really serve Him.

Persecution will help change that. If you talk to a Christian in an Islamic nation, you will see a love for Christ that most American Christians could not understand. They are willing to give up everything for Christ. That is what persecution brings. It brings clarity and purpose. The lack of persecution has created an environment of complacency and apathy among American Christians. The more we are attacked, however, the more this will change.

Notice the following verse in reference to the Children of Israel during the time of the Egyptian Captivity: “But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew.” – Exodus 1:12

No one wants persecution and the persecution currently perpetuated on American Christians is rather tame. But it is getting worse. However, I believe persecution provides the following qualities that I believe are lacking in American Christianity:

1. Solidarity – When you are being attacked you could care less about minor disagreements between brethren (Ps 133:1, Pro 6:14).
2. Clarity – You gain an innate sense of where the battle really is (Eph 6:12).
3. Meaning – Nothing gains value more than when there is a threat of losing it or you don’t have access to it (2 Sam 10:12, 23:15-17).
4. A Voice – History has proven that the loudest voices are usually the oppressed and subjugated (Ex 3:7).
5. Drive and Purpose – Being persecuted forces you to focuses on a particular goal, a particular purpose (Mat 16:24, Philp 3:8).
6. Faith – The faith of a persecuted individual is phenomenal (Acts 7:59, 21:13).
7. Fruit – It is during the most difficult times that the greatest fruit is produced (Acts 19:11-21).

Yes indeed, these attacks on Christianity just might be a good thing. I may not like it. I may not want it, but if it is coming…bring it on!
